Self Reflection

No matter who you are, learning plays a huge role in anyone’s life. Starting college can be very shocking as you question your ability on everything. Whether I’m good enough? Or Will I remember all the information I learned in High school? As a student at City College, I realized that the English class I take has had a very progressive and cumulative effect on the information I learned. My learning journey has just begun as I dwell on all the progress I achieved throughout the semester.

Let’s begin with our first two assignments. The “Where I am from” Essay. This piece was a great start to the semester. I enjoyed writing it and the outline was a great guide. Through this assignment I was able to acknowledge my classmates and my range of linguistic differences as resources. Many people in our class decided to talk about their culture and origins which was very educational. The next assignment was an interview where we paired up with a fellow peer and came up with a cohesive interview. Through the interview I felt as I explored negotiating my own writing goals as it was up to me to dictate my goals and audience expectations. I fairly enjoyed this assignment as it was very creative and independently maneuvered.

The Op-Ed assignment was the most educational in terms of writing. This piece was very opinionated yet required a lot of sources to back it up. It was required to formulate a stance through your writing. Also, this piece relied heavily on the use of library resources and online databases that we had a full class with the CCNY librarian to guide us. To add on, throughout this assignment was divided into multiple sections to enhance the strategies of drafting, revising, and editing. We had to peer revise our drafts and edit our Op-Ed. With an assignment reliant on sources comes an annotated bibliography which requires strength in analyzing and citing sources. Overall, I have never written an Op-Ed before nor did i know about this type of paper therefore it was very progressive.

As the semester came to a halt, the final assignment was a gantt project. This gantt project required a group of peers to come up with a grant to help fix a problem in our community. My group decided to create a project on the overproduction of plastic. This was one of my favorite assignments throughout the semester as it allowed us to engage in multimodal composing. I am very fond of creative projects as I enjoy it more than writing. Through this project we were able to create a presentation which I took lead into designing it with the help of my teammates. A part of the project was to create a written narrative piece which allowed my group to engage in collaborative aspects of the writing process as we worked on it together. The final part was the presentation which I surprisingly enjoyed. Throughout my education I’ve had a hard time presenting whether it’s forgetting everything on the spot or stuttering. Although I was fairly nervous I feel like I prepared well and it was one of the best presentations I’ve ever done.

In conclusion, Throughout my learning experiences. The information that was given to me was beneficial. I learned many valuable techniques that will be utilized in the future. Learning is a significant achievement, and taking a class and leaving full of helpful information is the best feeling as you feel successful. Through the course, all the phases helped me in different ways. My writing improved throughout as I was aware of many practical techniques that were unknown or forgotten.
